How do we talk about gender? Some key terms
Gender:
-This is a set of characteristics which define the difference between male and female.
-Historically these characteristics, particularly the biological differences between men and women have been used to subjugate women and empower men.
Patriarchy:
-Patriarchy is part of the dominant ideology that describes male rule-men are in control of society and that this is 'natural' and 'just'.
Words to describe men and women:
Men:
-Masculine
-Strong
-Emotionless
-Dominant
-Solitary
- Self-confident
Women:
-Feminine
-Weak
-Emotional
-Dependent
-Self-conscious
Feminism and female infidelity:
-Laura Mulvey's concept of the male gaze-women looked at by men, Women can be seen as 'sex objects', from here we get the term objectification.
