News values are general guidelines or criteria used by media outlets, such as newspaper or broadcast medias, to determine how much prominence to give a story.
The news article I have chosen is from the 'New York Times' in which the headline reads 'Trump returns to North Korea to list of State Sponsors of terrorism'.
A news value that this includes is proximity in which it is stated that "Mr Trump has vowed to seek complete 'denuclearization' in North Korea and has threatened 'fire and fury' aimed at the country if it endangers the United states". This is proximity because firstly its an issue surrounding a country in the Western World, which is the United states, so this issue is very close to it and its citizens.
Secondly it is proximity because the article was written by the 'New York times' and this is an American newspaper organisation so it writes about American issues because the situations affect its citizens and they are more likely to take an interest in it because it is close to home.
Another news value that applies to this news article is threshold in which the number of people that will be affected if America was to go to war with North Korea would be an unthinkable amount so it is more likely for this too be written about because it appeals too more people.
This News article also consists of personalisation in which Donald Trump is being written about in which he is presented as the main individual that is calling for war even though he is not an individual in this case , because he is part of a government that consists of many different people that all have to agree on what is said. This is done because Donald Trump is an extremely high public figure and he is also the President of the United states so he is more likely to be covered than other people that are not of a high status.
The news article also includes conflict in which they believe strife is newsworthy, so war would be a good topic too report on, for people will have different ideas as too if they are for or against it, this would create talk debates and gossip on a very wide scale within America and all over the world, alternatively giving the news story more fame.
This news article also involves Negativity in which this issue is in the spotlight of public concern, in this case this issue would affect a lot of people not only in the Western World but also in the third world countries. America has allies such as the Uk in which they may call upon to help within the war and that could also affect the England and its citizens. America may also call upon armies in third world countries to help within the war and that will also affect them too, so all together if America was to go into war it would affect the whole world.

You do understand the theory and apply news values to this story Candace. You use media language in the essay. However the essay is rather short and you need to add a conclusion. You would benefit from adding more detailed examples in your essays, with quotations and image analysis. C- (Vanessa)
